Guide Books & Map Recommendations:
Trekking in the Everest Region by Jamie McGuinness (Trailblazer Publications, 5th edition 2009) is an invaluable resource for self guided trekkers on the Everest Base Camp Trail, which includes the Classic Route from Jiri in addition to several other side trips and alternative routes in the Gaurishankar Conservation area, Solu Khumbu & Everest Region. Although advice and route information provided on this website for individual sections was transcribed from our personal journals documenting our trek, Mr. McGuinness's guide provided assistance while on the trail and recalling names of hamlets & villages in addition to misc. altitudes that were not located in our journals. In addition to information about the trail, Jamie McGuinness includes valuable tips about costs, history, cultural information, flora & fauna, distances, safety tips, and other miscellaneous information. We also used various maps multiple times per day, especially in the Gaurishankar & Solu region below Lukla to find our way and measure elevations and heights of peaks. For information regarding other parts of Nepal such as the Kathmandu Valley & Tehri we found Lonely Planet Nepal & Rough Guide Nepal to be helpful resources that includes information on sights, lodging, food, cultural history, and other information.
