Grindelwald - Lauterbrunnen
Distance: 19 km 6-7 hours One of the quintessential and deservedly most popular hiking routes in Switzerland the Grindelwald to Lauterbrunnen trail is more crowded then other sections & quite steep in some sections. In addition, you will gain over 1100 meters in elevation and descend almost 1300 meters before arriving in Lauterbrunnen. However you are rewarded for your effort with stunning views of famous mountains like the Eiger, Monch, & Jungfrau in addition to lush meadows, pastureland, and towering peaks in both directions. Although this is a difficult walk there are plenty of facilities & multiple routes to reach your destination. Below is the description of the main path going through Alpiglen, Kleine Scheidegg, Wengen, Lauterbrunnen. The alternative option descends Grindewald towards Grund crossing over a bridge then taking a right at the trail junction following signs to Mannlichen. This route is equally scenic and more remote however it's a bit longer than the below described route with a really steep descent to Wengen. The main option from Grindelewald (1034 meters) starts at the main railway station then descends towards Grund and crosses over a small bridge before steeply climbing a path between houses following signs to Alpiglen & Kleine Scheidegg. The route continues to climb past beautiful grassy fields and farm houses with fantastic views of the Wetterhorn to your left. The tarmac route eventually gives way to a dirt path through a forest until you reach Alpiglen. Cross the rail line & continue to climb a more gradual path with spectacular views until you reach the Kleine Scheidegg about 1 1/2-2 hours later. This small resort village has several restaurants and hotels that accommodate numerous tourists and trekkers. The Wengen-Jungfraujoch railway line & Wengen funicular deposits lots of people a day at this village making it one of the most crowded stops on the trail. Continue to the left crossing the railway track following the farm track that passes a small pond, Wengernalp curving around a hill with fantastic views of the Monch and eventually Lauterbrunnen valley below which will blow your mind. There are two options but we decided to follow the path descending along the railway track to the right which eventually traverses down to Wengen about 2-3 hours from Kleine Scheidegg. Wengen is a beautiful but sprawling nearly car free resort town with dozens of lodges, restaurants, & shopping options. From there you can take the miniature train (10 minute ride) down or take a traversing path, following yellow sign posts (45 min - 1 hr), to Lauterbrunnen (798 meters).
