Suvarnabhumi International Airport
Suvarnabhumi International Airport is the main airport for international arrivals and departures (Air Asia and domestic flights typically uses Don Mueang Airport, see below). You can get to your next location by rail, taxi, rental car, bus, or private hire vehicle. Located about a 30 minute drive from the downtown business district of Bangkok, Suvarnabhumi is a modern airport with multiple transport options. Typically lines for immigration & customs is the busiest during late morning and afternoon arrivals, however most International flights arrive in the evening or late at night. See below for instructions on picking up an official taxi at Suvarnabhumi International Airport. If you don't have a good feeling about your taxi driver just walk back to the machine and take another number. There is is also a rail link (see below) to Bangkok operating from about 6am-11pm or so.
Immigration & Visa information:
-International visitors from several countries including the USA will get a immigration stamp in your passport on arrival at the airport allowing you to stay in Thailand for 30 days (may be asked to provide proof of outbound ticket). You can reapply for an additional 30 days in Thailand. ***Remember to keep your immigration ticket that they place in your passport after stamped or you will have to pay a fine when leaving Thailand. Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail Link
Convenient and clean, the airport rail link is a great way to travel between Suvarnabhumi airport and Bangkok. The rail line runs between around 6am-11pm (check official webpage for times of operation which are subject to change). The rail line will be a little slower then a taxi. You can take the rail link into Bangkok then take the MRT (underground subway) or BTS (above ground tram). Click Here for a MRT & BTS map including the Suvarnabhumi Airport Rail link.
Taxi:
Taxi's from Suvarnabhumi International Airport can be picked up by taking a long escalator down I believe two flights from where you exit customs to level 1 (near exit 3,4, 7). You will pick up a ticket from an automated machine. The corresponding number on the ticket is shown above parked Taxi's. There should be a fixed price from the airport to Bangkok (around 300-430 baht) depending on time of day as nighttime is more expensive.
***Don't go in Taxi's that are not official (part of the ticketing system) or do not accept rides from taxi drivers that directly approach you as you may get scammed or put yourself in danger.
Car Rental:
Unless you are fluent in Thai or have extensive experience driving in Thailand I do not recommend you rent a car to travel through Thailand. Do your research on Thai laws regarding international driving licenses/permits and Thai motor vehicle laws. However, if you are interested in renting a vehicle click on the link above. Bus :

Private Car
Private vehicle and taxi is a great way to get around Bangkok. I don't know a lot about private vehicle hire but you can click on the link above for some suggestions or look through guidebooks from Lonely Planet or Rough Guide. Thai motorists drive on the left side of the road.
Motorcycles and Scooter Rental:
Renting a scooter and motorcycle can be a convenient way to travel in small towns in Thailand however please be careful and make sure you have experience and are familiar with driving in Bangkok, have experience with motorcycles/scooters, understand Thai motor vehicle laws, and take safety precautions like wearing your helmet. ***Bangkok police have been cracking down on tourists not wearing helmets riding scooters/motorcycles around Thailand. You can get a hefty "fine" or have your scooter/motorcycle confiscated. Please wear a helmet and have your passenger wear a helmet.
