Kathmandu -- Food
You can feast for days and just scratch the surface of all Kathmandu has to offer for gastronomic delights. The food ranges from Nepali & Newari to International fair that will fill your belly without emptining your wallet. If it's street food you are interested in you may not find as many stalls as say in Thailand, India, or other parts of Asia, however walk south of Thamel to Asan Tol & Thahiti to find local fair, butchers, and vegetable vendors. The following restaurants are divided by neighborhood: Thamel: Utse Restaurant (Tibetan/Breakfast): An incredible restaurant located inside of the Hotel Utse specializing in Tibetan dishes. The momo's, Thukpa, Shabalay, & meat/veggie set meals are amazingly good. But what makes this restaurant special is the traditional interior and the owners of the hotel, who are warm and welcoming to all guests. The hotel also has particularly comfortable lodging. Furusato (Japanese): Down an alley near Helena's is this tasty 2nd floor Japanese restaurant that serves delicious and filling udon noodle soups and other regional dishes. Thamel House (Newari): This Newari building has traditional seating and a dance show accompanied by unique Newari dishes that are difficult to find outside of Nepal. Northfield Cafe (International): A large restaurant with traditional Nepali music some nights serves various international fare, however our favorite is the Fajita's. There is also a fire pit and they have a kid friendly menu Roadhouse Cafe (Pizza): Located a little north of Helena's is this excellent pizza joint using a wood fired pizza oven serving other hot Italian dishes. Thakali Kitchen (Nepali): Traditional Nepali cuisine that is really tasty. Many locals stop here and the Dhal Bhat is quite good. Chikusa (Coffee/Breakfast): Across from Hotel Utse is this wonderful diner with drip coffee and a solid breakfast with various Nepali and international fair. More like a old school diner then a run of the mill cafe Pumpernickel Bakery (Coffee/Cafe): If you are in the mood for a Cappecuino or some tasty baked goods and sandwiches, visit this cafe located across from Or2K to spend a lazy day or plan your next adventure. Helena's (International/Breakfast): Good breakfast, international, and some local fare make this a classic choice. You will have to walk up several floors to get to the restaurant. Fire & Ice (Pizzeria): Really good Pizza, Italian desserts, espresso always filled with crowds. Be prepared to share a table. Ghar e Kabab (Northern Indian): Located inside the swanky Hotel de l'Annapurna a 5-10 minute walk east of Thamel is one of the best Indian restaurants in Kathmandu. There is traditional Indian music playing most nights. Cheng Cheng (Chinese): Located in the Centre Point Hotel in North Thamel, this fairly authentic Chinese restaurant has a massive menu and every dish we ordered was prepared fresh. This is more authentic then the other Chinese places you will find in Thamel. Or2K (Middle Eastern): This 2nd floor Restaurant has tons of delicious Middle Eastern dishes and vegetarian's will find loads to eat. All seating is on comfortable cushions on the floor so bring warm socks. There is a take away falafel joint downstairs if you need something cheap on the go. |
