Day 27: Ghat (Tanga) - Lukla
This pleasant 1 hour walk to Lukla follows the same trail as Day 8. However at the trail junction at Cheplung (next to Ama Dablam Lodge) take a left to head towards Lukla, which involves another 30 minutes of walking. For the adventurous type or if you flew into Lukla and didn't get to experience the arduous but life changing Jiri-Lukla section of the trail, make a right at the trail junction in Cheplung towards Surke. If you have chosen to walk to Jiri click on this link Day 1 - Day 8 for more information. ***Note: if heading back to Jiri please ensure buses/cars/planes are traveling to Kathmandu to avoid getting stuck. When arriving in Lukla you will check in at a police/ranger checkpoint before heading into town. Make sure your TIMS card/Passport/ & National Park Conservation Fee are still in your possession. As you come into town you will be bombarded by all the modern conveniences you may have missed while on the trail, however Lukla, for some, is a dusty town that can be quite overwhelming. Lukla is essential one long main street that leads to the airport. We stayed at Khumbu Hotel, a two story quite luxurious option with private shower, good food, and clean/warm rooms. It's located in the middle of town across from the Irish & Scottish Pub and across from a delicious cafe. Although there may be more ATM & banking facilities we had difficulty finding them in Lukla in November, 2013. If all else fails you can visit the local banks near the airport to get a cash advance on your credit card. There are several airline offices that have unpredictable hours. Please click on Getting to/from Trailhead link for more information about the Lukla airport.
