Day 26: Namche Bazaar - Ghat (Thadkoshi)
Please Note: The Hotel Sherpa View Point described in this section in Thadkoshi was destroyed by the recent Earthquakes. The family is currently rebuilding and construction should be complete by October, 2015. To donate to their rebuilding process click on this link Hotel Sherpa View Point Go Fund Me page that we created. 100% of your donations will go towards the family and their rebuilding process. This is the last in a series of long day hikes to reach your destination. Essentially you follow the trail in the opposite direction from Tanga/Ghat to Namche Bazaar. However this time you descend most of the way from 3450 meters to 2700 meters in around 4 - 5 hours. (See Day 8 or Day 9 for more information about the trail). A few minutes down from Namche Bazaar don't forget to check out from the National Park Ranger station so they can mark out your name. We descended this route in early November, 2013. After passing a long bridge about 1 hour outside of Namche Bazaar, especially in the busy season if past 10am, you will notice how crowded this particular section of the trail becomes. We were astonished by the lack of experience we saw on the trail in this section passing many trekkers (on their way up) who were conversing about how this was their first hiking experience & had not yet broken in their boots! Take care to be on the mountain side in narrow sections when passing yak's & dzogo's in addition to large groups. Fortunately, much of the trail is wide enough at this point to allow you to pass without incident. Also, although it can get hot on this section of the trail, please keep your shirt on as it's disrespectful to local communities to hike 1/2 naked. Many local Sherpa & Rai guides/porters complained about this lack of modesty. During this section you pass many villages that you entered on the way up including Jorsale (last ranger station to check out) Monjo, Benkar, Phakding, & Ghat, & Tanga. Following the Dudh Kosi river we made our way to our destination of Thadkoshi, a tiny settlement 5-10 minutes south of Ghat where we stayed at the friendly and well built Hotel Sherpa View Point (Thadkoshi), owned by Fumu & Mingma Sherpa & their lovely daughter, Tsezi Sherpa. This hotel has outside & inside dining facilities, delicious food, and warm/comfortable rooms. Alternatively you can stay another day in Namche Bazaar another day to shop or relax before the long descent. |
