Brown Cafe's or "Bruin Cafe" have been serving alcohol and snacks to Amsterdam's patrons for centuries. Amsterdam's traditional brown cafe's are best described as cozy extensions of peoples homes, often opened in the 18th or 19th century that got its name from the tobacco stains on the walls although smoking is now illegal in bars and restaurants in Amsterdam. Some of Amsterdam's oldest Brown Cafe's such as Int Aepjen, Cafe Chris, Hoppe, & Cafe Karpershoek were opened in the 17th century.
